The M. Sc., Degree Programme
Experts in the field of biology have predicted that biotechnology will dominate the 21st century. Biodiversity coupled with vast sea shore / marine wealth, there is a real chance for India to emerge as a significant contributor in the field of biotechnology. Keeping the enhanced manpower required in biotechnology in the coming years in mind, a two year M. Sc. course in biotechnology with specialization in Marine Biotechnology is offered for candidates with Physical / Life sciences background. The objective of this course is to impart theory and hands on experience in biotechnology with special reference to Marine Biotechnology. This course paves the way for man power development for future employment in Biotechnological / Pharmaceutical / Marine Industries, R & D institutions, clinical laboratories and academic institutions.
Eligibility
The Bachelor's Degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical (Physics, Chemistry or equivalent) / Biological (Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology or equivalent) / Agricultural / Veterinary / Fisheries Sciences / Pharmacy / Engineering / Technology with at least 55% marks.
Selection procedure
The selection will be based on the marks obtained in the Entrance Examination and Interview. The Entrance Examination will be conducted at Karaikudi and Chennai. Choice of centre is permissible and in case if it is not possible to allot the centre of the candidate's choice, the University reserves the right to allot an alternative centre.
Guidelines / Course Outlines for Entrance Examination:
The question paper for Entrance Examination will be of objective type questions at the Degree level carrying a total of 100 questions. This will have questions from Unit 1. Biochemistry and Instrumentation, Unit 2. Microbiology and Immunology, Unit 3. Cell Biology and Physiology, Unit 4. Molecular Genetics and rDNA Technology, Unit 5. Ecology and Evolution. Each unit will carry 20 questions.
The Prospectus and Application can be had from the Registrar, Alagappa University, Karaikudi - 630 003 on requisition along with a crossed Bank Draft for Rs. 300/- (for SC/ST candidates Rs. 150/- on production of Community Certificate) drawn in favour of The Registrar, Alagappa University, Payable at Karaikudi. Applicants have to write their name and address on the reverse of the Bank Draft. Alternatively, application can be downloaded from this site and filled in application should be accompanied by a Bank Draft for the specified amount. All correspondence should be addressed to the Registrar, Alagappa University, Karaikudi - 630 003, clearly quoting your Application / Registration Number. The University is not responsible for any postal delay / loss in communication. Filled in application received after the last date and incomplete application will be summarily rejected.
Instructions for filling the Application Form:
The Application Form is required to be filled up by using CAPITAL LETTERS as far as possible giving the correct information. Please read the instructions given hereunder before filling up the Form. Where the information is required to be filled in boxes, only one alphabet be written in one box. In case the number of alphabets exceeds the number of boxes, the information may be appropriately abbreviated.
Choice of Examination Centre: Put 1 against your first choice and No. 2 against your second choice.

- Copy of Statement of Mark(s) of Qualifying Degree
- Copy of Community Certificate ( for SC/ST/DNC/MBC/BC candidates only)
- A self addressed stamped (Rs. 5) envelope
General Information
Selected candidates will be intimated by post.
On receipt of the intimation of selection, the candidate should pay the fees immediately to the University in person for the I Semester or for the whole year and such other special fees prescribed by the University. Selected candidates who do not pay their fees within the time specified in the admission card will forfeit their seats. The selected candidates will have to submit the following to the Department at the time of joining.
a) Statement of Marks / Grade Certificates and Provisional / Degree certificate.
b) Conduct Certificate from the Head of the Institution last studied.
c) Transfer Certificate
d) Community Certificate in case of SC / ST / DNC / MBC / BC.
e) Certificate of Medical Fitness and such other Certificates, as may be required by the University
f ) Two stamp size colour photographs.
All admissions made are only provisional till the certificate / grade etc., submitted by the candidates are scrutinized and accepted. If any candidate is found to have got admission on false claims, the admission is liable to be cancelled without notice.

Hostel Facilities
