The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002. The Department offers a two year M. Sc., Degree Course in Biotechnology from the Academic year 2002 - 2003. DBT, Govt. of India has extended financial support for strengthening of laboratory equipments to be utilized for M.Sc., Biotechnology teaching. Doctoral programme leading to Ph.D. is also being offered at the Department since 2002. The Department is undertaking research projects of national importance in the field of biotechnology and attracted funds from various agencies such as Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), University Grants Commission (UGC), Dredging Corporation of India and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology (TNSCS&T). The Department is housing a National Facility in the form of Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF), funded by DBT since 2006. Recently DBT, Govt. of India has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 1,04,32,500 for conducting a One Year Post M.Sc., Advanced Diploma Course in Molecular Diagnostics from the academic year 2008-2009.
